This is a beautiful book, lavishly illustrated with black and white and color photography, maps, montages and graingerized (inserted between the pages) reproductions of travel memorabilia. It captures the lure of far-off places and as well as the magical sense of adventure that travel has held for us all during the past 150 years. The text includes wonderful quotations from world travelers. I have found it to be very useful in the development of a 6th-grade study unit on travel focusing on turn-of-the-19th-century life, the Vanderbilt family and the Grand Tour, as well as for other research projects. This book takes us to all the places we dream of seeing, and tempts us to imagine life in another time and place.
