Dr. Leonard provides the first comprehensive investigation of the Soviet GRU, ever. In the west, we fail to appreicate that Soviet military intelligence focused on much more than simply the armaments, troops, tactics, and location of possible enemy forces. He reveals in great detail how the GRU developed alongside the NKVD/KGB. The GRU combined a comprehensive approach to espionage on the military, industrial/technological and political fronts. Espionage was coordinated both with military objectives and the overall objectives of the Party through the KGB. This is perhaps the most detailed and in depth analysis I have ever read. It is must reading for students of Soviet military and intelligence studies.
